Dear all,

Just to give an update... My original letter was sent on the 7th of December to Planning Magazine and RTPI officers as noted. I've yet to receive a reply from any of the recipients (there were 5) either to my personal email address, or in the letters section of the magazine. I appreciate that my letter was a little long for the space there, however, so I'm not surprised it's not been published.

That being said, this weeks Planning Magazine does have a letter from the RTPI President (page 24 in case you missed it) about the merits of having membership of the RTPI to attract back lapsed members.

Most interestingly, there's a Fyson piece (page 11) on "the need to argue planning's front line role as government searches to cut back on public spend", which does raise some the same points and concerns we've raised here about Government cut backs and efficiency savings... but doesn't get as far as talking about the RTPI's role in this.

I'd be interested to know if anyone else has had any success or reply? I know other letters and emails have been sent...

I agree with Alex

As a planner who was unemployed for half of this year, and might still be unemployed if my firm hadn't taken me back on reduced pay, I think the challenges to the profession have be grossly understated by the media (including our esteemed Planning Magazine).

Good question Alex. We've raised similar points about what role the RTPI has and should have, and hopefully might get a response soon. I'd be interested what your view on it all is?

II must take issues with planning magazine can you explain why there is an emphasis on housing in recent editorials? As planners we must much focus on getting our own house in order first. Our profession is in a total, mess spatial planning is an abject failure what is the way ahead? There are hundreds of unemployed planning graduates what is going to be done in 2010? Bob Kerslake (Head of Homes and Communities) was asked at a recent meeting to provide unpaid work to aid these kids. Planning magazine has done nothing on this issue except offering supplements which highlights university courses as I found today (Dec 17th) Advertisers before reality what a thought for 2010!!!!
